Window campaign is started

THE small community at St John’s Church, in Beck Row, is urging people to get behind its ‘£1 for a pane’ campaign as it battles to raise £5,000 for repairs to windows of the Victorian church.

A review of the church structure has shown that some windows have come loose from the stone surround while the stained glass east window has slipped and developed a significant bulge.

The 20-strong congregation is now organising a series of fund-raising activities including asking people to donate a pound for a pane of glass.

Churchwarden Bruce Gardener said: “If everybody in the village donated £1 we could raise quite a lot of money towards the work.”

Next weekend there are three days of fund-raising, including a talk by Mary Griffiths about the German occupation of the Channel Isles and the Memorial Tapestry on Thursday, July 26, while on the Friday people can sing along with Ken and Paulette Smith.

On July 28 there is a table top sale. Contact Mr Gardener on 07778 394481 or Martha Mullen on 01638 718200 to book a table.
