Web Poll: Shorter festival will bring ‘burst of culture’ to town

This year’s Bury St Edmunds Festival will be a ‘smaller but perfectly formed’ four day event featuring contemporary and classical music, dance, film, art and walks.

At a launch event at The Apex on Wednesday, festival manager Nick Wells stressed there was ‘nothing sinister’ in the shorter event, to be held between May 16 and 19, and the 20,000 visitors who flock to the town each year will find all their favourites in the crammed programme.

He said: “This year’s festival is shorter than usual but rest assured that the programme is still packed with a wide variety of renowned musicians, films, walks and exhibitions.”

The highlights of this year’s festival include a joint performance by Lesley Garret and Emma Johnson, supported by Andrew West on the piano, a celebration of Britten’s centenary by cellist Matthew Barley and a performance by stars of Cuban music Sierra Maestra.

Venues across the town will spring into festival fever during the event including The Apex, the Theatre Royal, The Cathedral, The Hunter Club, Abbeygate Picturehouse, Smiths Row Art Gallery, The Edmund Gallery and The Constitutional Club.

Mr Wells said his aim in assembling the programme was to present a broad inclusive ‘burst of culture’.

Favourites including the Greene King Real Beer and Food Festival, a film series at Abbeygate Picturehouse and the Bury Songwriting Competition are also all present in this year’s line up.

The Friday evening performance in the Abbey Gardens will be given by Michael Jackson tribute act Navi, the only Michael Jackson tribute ever to have performed for the man himself.

The shorter festival may not be here to stay, organisers are seeking feedback in order to make an informed decision on what the festival should look like in the future.
