Village with something for all wins countywide award
The village of Cockfield has won Suffolk Village of the Year
Cockfield’s well developed sense of community spirit has won it first place in the 2012 Suffolk Village of the Year Award.
The award, run by the Suffolk Association of Local Councils , is not a beauty competition for pretty villages.
Coordinator Rona Burt said: “It’s not chocolate box villages. It’s about the people there and who the care for.”
She said 20 villages entered the competition, which this year was for villages with 501 to 1,250 on their electoral roll.
The three shortlisted were Cockfield, Bardwell and Worlingworth, which all impressed the judges with how well villages cared for them.
What made Cockfield stand out for the judges?
“First of all, the community spirit,” said Mrs Burt. “It seems they’ve got many more organisations than most.
“It’s not just the elderly they’re looking after, it seems to be from a fairly young age they’re catering for.”
It even surprised Janne Cutting-Keyton, a Cockfield parish councillor and coordinator of the village’s entry.
“Until I got into it I didn’t realise there was so much going on,” she said. “We have a lot of clubs and societies, two pubs, a restaurant and the village hall is well used.”
Cockfield’s Earls Meadow Project tied with Worlingworth for the Suffolk Wildlife Trust Natural Environment Awards.
The 2013 Suffolk Village of the Year will be for villages of 1,251 to 2,250 and entries will open in February.
