VIDEO: Work to dual the final section of the A11 finally begins
Work to dual the last nine mile single carriageway section of the A11 was formally started this morning.
The £105 million project will see the section of road between Fiveways roundabout and Thetford widened and a new section of bypass built around the village of Elveden,
Roads Minister, Stephen Hammond, heralded it a ‘great day for Norfolk for Suffolk’.
He said: “This is the last piece of road network between London and Norwich that was single carriageway, it’s not going to be any more and that has got to be great news.
“One for the people just travelling around the area, great news for economics and the growth prospects for this area and more importantly, or as importantly, I think it’s going to actually add to the safety of this piece of road.”
Road users could be travelling along the new section of by-pass, around Elveden, as soon as September 2014, with the entire scheme expected to be completed in December 2014.
Mr Hammond said: “The government is committed to giving this country the first-class infrastructure we need, and the A11 is another example of how we are delivering projects that will boost the economy, especially in the East of England.”
The works will also see five new bridges built as well as a new underpass for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders, near Elveden war memorial.
Suffolk County Council has contributed a third of the cost of providing the underpass.
Guy McGregor, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for roads and transport, said: “We are incredibly pleased that this project is up and running and it is a relief that work is underway - we have wanted these improvements for some time.”
Mr Hammond will also attend a meeting to discuss the future of the A14 this afternoon.
When asked if roads in the East had previously been neglected, he said: “It may have been the Cinderella region once but it’s certainly not the Cinderella region now”
A 40mph speed limit for the length of the works came into effect today.
