Verdict given in the Nowton Park horse death inquest
A verdict of accidental death has been returned by a jury after a two week inquest into the death of Carole Bullett who was killed by a runaway horse and cart.
Coroner Peter Dean this afternoon said he would be writing to the Department of Transport calling for statutory regulations on the use of horse and carriages close to the public.
The Health and Safety Executive have said that it will review the evidence and now decide if any prosecutions will take place.
Mrs Bullett, 57, from Clark Walk, Bury St Edmunds, received serious injuries on June 19 2011 when she was struck by the bolting horse and cart at Nowton Park Country Fair.
She died the following day in Addenbrooke’s Hospital.
Her family have described her as ‘a loving wife and mother and grandmother’ who was devoted to her family and was always available when needed.
She had worked for 10 years as a support worker at the Grosvenor facility at the Wedgwood Unit.
Hannah Rutterford, solicitor representing the Bullett family, said: “They’re absolutely relieved the inquest is now finally over.
“It has been very distressing for them to hear the evidence but particularly to hear of failings which, had they been considered properly beforehand, this incident may never have happened.”
Duncan Drye, who owned the horse involved in the incident, declined to comment.
