TV legend drops in for day of number crunching fun

A visit from a TV legend plus a day of number crunching games equalled one happy Thetford school last week.

Pupils at Norwich Road School went nutty for numbers last Wednesday when the former host of Think of a Number, Johnny Ball, dropped in for its Maths Day.

They were treated to activities such as making their own Very Hungry Caterpillars, solving a murder mystery and a host of other puzzles and challenges designed to work their maths skills.

Lesley Tindall, maths co-ordinator, said the school was ‘thrilled’ at Mr Ball’s visit - and staff were a little starstruck.

“It was fantastic to have Johnny Ball with us, it has helped to make a great day even better.

“The aim of the day was to raise the profile of maths in our school community and to promote the idea that maths is fun - we definitely achieved everything we set out to do,” he said.

Students India Fairweather and Harry Graveling were equally impressed.

India said: “He was really clever the way he did tricks with numbers.”

Harry added: “Johnny Ball was really, really clever.”

Mr Ball entertained pupils from Year 4, 5 and 6 on the day.

The ex-BBC presenter still works to promote mathematics in the UK.

Last year he also appeared in Strictly Come Dancing, being eliminated in the first week of the competition.
