A travel scheme for young people funded by the county council could be re-introduced in Suffolk.

The new Endeavour card could offer 25 per cent discounts off a standard single adult bus fare for young people aged 19 and under.

The initiative would fill a hole left by the controversially axed Explore card, which council bosses hope will ‘remove transport barriers’ for young people to help them access learning, work and training opportunities.

Cllr Guy McGregor, cabinet member for transport, said: “The card would make a huge contribution to the aims of the Raising the Bar initiative to raise attainment and aspiration, and to better match skills with future jobs.”

The smart card will act like an Oyster card enabling cashless payment on specified public transport services.

Following a meeting with the authority, bus operators First, Anglian, Ipswich Buses and Chambers agreed there was ‘value and merit’ in introducing the scheme.

Council bosses also see potential for the card to be used on rail services The card would cost the council about £1.4 million over five years with a £165,00 start up and a further £250,000 each year. In comparison, the Explore card cost £1.8 million a year.

Meanwhile, a one off £100,000 injection is proposed to Suffolk ACRE to continue support for their scooter loan scheme for young people. Proposals will be discussed by the council’s cabinet on Tuesday.
