Town’s festival kicks off today

STOWMARKET has festival fever – the town’s annual 10-day music, arts and sports festival starts today.

The exciting programme kicks off today with guitarist Greg Fitch and funky drummer Aaron Hall playing at the farmers’ market, an afternoon of Coffee and Comedy at Stowmarket Community Centre and a night of live music at the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts.

Tomorrow, the StowBlues event returns to the Museum of East Anglian Life showcasing the best blues acts from across the region. Seven top-class bands, including Absolution, Back Porch, Blues Situation and Saiichi Sugiyama Band will entertain the crowds – there will also be a bar and a barbecue.

Sunday will see Cedars Park celebrate the Jubilee with its biggest ever community event as part of the town’s festival. Performers will include the Rainbow Guides, a Tai Chi demonstration and music from Stowmarket’s own Lisa Ambrose.

Other events on the 10-day programme include a Queen’s Jubilee party at Stowmarket Town FC and Comedy at the Regal on Sunday, a huge Jubilee celebration at Stowmarket Recreation Ground on Monday, StowSports sports day at Cedars Park Community Primary School on Thursday together with a parkour demonstration around the town.

John Peel’s favourite choir, the Stowmarket Chorale, are also performing at the John Peel Centre on Friday.

The festival raps up with StowFest, a free community music festival next Sunday (June 10).

Organiser Daniel Harvey said: “We launched the festival in 2010 and it’s quickly developed into an important time of year for the town with lots of groups and organisations holding events as part of it. There’s all sorts of stuff going on – loads of live music in the town centre, John Peel Centre and, of course, at StowBlues and StowFest.”
