Tower ceiling is Tailor Made
Craftsmen in Bildeston are busily making a magnificent gilded ceiling ready for installation in the Millennium Tower, at St Edmundsbury Cathedral.
Tailor Made Joinery, in Ipswich Road, is making the ceiling, which will be installed over the coming months.
The vault will be made of oak, gilded and painted in blue, green and red. While it is being installed, 42 heraldic coats of arms of the dioceses of the Church of England will also be fixed into place.
The vaulted ceiling was part of the original vision for the tower, which was otherwise completed in July 2005. The Dykes Bower Trust – a main funder of the original project – and several private donors are financing the latest work.
Canon Michael Hampel, cathedral sub-dean, said: "We have waited several years for this exciting news. Local people will be employed in creating something beautiful and inspiring for everyone to enjoy."
On Monday, work started on constructing the scaffolding within the tower. The ceiling work is due to be completed in March 2010, but the cathedral will be open as usual during the project.
