Time for tea in the Ickworth House of 1935
Ickworth house show what life was like for the kitchen and house staff in the years gone by. FL; Ixworth house staff from the 1930's sit down to a traditional afternoon tea in the staff dinning hall.
THE ‘servants’ at Ickworth House had a rare treat on Saturday when they sat down to a tea of mellow fruitfulness.
The National Trust house’s two Living History days this month were based on the theme of the ‘season of mellow fruitfulness’, with the kitchen staff preparing a variety a fruit tarts and serving them to the rest of the servants in staff dining hall. All the servants are played by volunteers.
While this year the produce is brought in, the hope is that next year some of it will be grown on the estate as the vineyard in the walled garden becomes a kitchen garden.
Sue Ellis, engagement manager, said: “We’re now recruiting for people who want to get involved with the outdoor work. They’ll all be costumed. We’re going to link the garden to the house.
“A cut flower border was put in this year because they used to match the cut flowers to the dinner services.”
The next living history day is on September 29 but you can you can also see the house’s downstairs rooms next Friday at 9pm on BBC2. They feature in Dr Pamela Cox’s programme called Servants: a True Story of Life Below Stairs, parts of which were filmed in the carefully recreated servants’ areas of Ickworth House.
