Thrills and spills wow crowds

Record crows enjoyed the thrills and spills as Botesdale hosted its sixth annual Soapbox Grand Prix on Monday.

Chris Burnyard who runs The Greyhound in the village organised the event. "It was brilliant. We had a fantastic day. Everybody enjoyed it," he said.

"There was some really good spills with people's wheels coming off as they went down the street which the crowd loved.

"We had a record number of entries, with 35 karts, while the number of spectators was up to about 2,500. It's growing every year. Last year we had about 2,000 people watch the race."

The soap boxes competed in heats of eight before going through to the final.

Youngster George Paine, 10, won the under 16s race and Paul Massingham representing drinkers at the Cock Inn in Diss won the adult race.

And an alien themed kart designed by Chris' brother Greg won best kart.

The event held in The Street raised about 350 for East Anglia's Children's Hospices, 200 for the Botesdale Village Hall management committee and 200 for Rickinghall Church.
