Thousands stolen from pub in daylight theft
A pub has been robbed of thousands of pounds in broad daylight.
White envelopes containing the takings from The One Bull, on Angel Hill, Bury St Edmunds, were believed to have been stolen by a man who walked in the front door of the pub on Tuesday at about 12.15pm.
After a busy bank holiday, landlord David Marjoram stopped off at the One Bull, one of three pubs he owns, for a meeting before going to the bank.
The thief struck after Mr Marjoram put his unlocked briefcase in a private office which was empty at the time.
Mr Marjoram said: "This guy got very lucky because money is usually never left sitting around and that office is always manned or locked. If it was an opportunist, then all their Christmases came at once.
"We trawled the CCTV and clocked a man in his late 40s to early 50s, wearing a white short-sleeve shirt, black trousers and black tie, who tried to get in the trade door and after having no luck walked in through the front door of the pub. He just blended right in.
"He walked across the restaurant and tried the door next to the kitchen, which is a service corridor to the back offices. He went down it and about 50 seconds later came back out and went out through the trade door."
At the time of the incident two members of staff were working and about seven customers were in the pub. Money was also stolen from another town centre pub earlier the same day, although police are not connecting the two thefts.
Offenders gained entry to The Falcon, in Risbygate Street, through a window between 5.45am and 8.30am and stole a till, cash and cigarettes.
Anybody with information about either crime should contact Bury Police on 01284 774100 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
