Things heat up in Emma’s bid for bake off success

I have spent this week sourcing local ingredients and receiving tips from the owners of artisan bakery Gastrono-me.
Gemma Simmonite, self taught baker and one half of the husband and wife team that is Gastrono-me, has kindly offered some advice as I enter the Great Suffolk Bake Off.
Applicants will enter a signature bake, which through produce or presentation must represent the theme of Suffolk.
On February 23, I will enter a sweet and savoury bake into the Bury St Edmunds heat of the charity competition in a bid to make it to the grand final.
Gemma suggested a variety of ways I could use the apples I have chosen to form the centre of my sweet bake and we made an apple streusel cake, which received warm reviews in the Bury Free Press newsroom.
We quickly agreed I do not have time to learn how to shape a sponge into the cathedral and instead will be focusing on great taste and local ingredients.
So armed with some golden tips I am honing a recipe based on Gemma’s advice and sourcing some interesting local products.
