Theatre to consult public as board chairman quits
The Theatre Royal is to engage in public consultation over plans for the venue’s future - as the chairman of its board announced he would step down.
The theatre’s board of trustees is to extend its period of consultation until January over a proposal for a single operation with the Apex and an alternative plan for continued independence with potential for shared services.
Peter Jones, the board’s lead on the due diligence process, said: “The board has already spent productive time to consider options and advice, but needs fully to test the respective operational, financial and artistic viability of both models. Consultation with our stakeholders is essential to that.”
The move was agreed at a special meeting of the board on Tuesday, where Brian Stewart announced he would be standing down as chairman and board trustee with immediate effect.
He said: “I have always sought to put the interests of the Theatre Royal first and by stepping aside at this moment, and removing my personal involvement within the process, I believe this allows the work of the board to continue without undue distraction.”
Vice chair Peter Jones will assume acting responsibility.

Cllr Sara Mildmay-White, cabinet member for culture at St Edmundsbury Borough Council, added: “If more time is needed by our partners then we are happy to keep the door open for any future form of collaboration.”
