'The end' for typesetters
The owner of a typesetting firm, which has been in Bury St Edmunds for 30 years, wound up his business this week, saying he could not compete with India.
Rowland Phototypesetting, of Fairview House, Lamdin Road, which employs 15 staff, is in the process of completing its final projects before closing for good.
Managing director Ian Rowland said on Wednesday: "We have been going for 30 years, but more and more work is transferring to India
"The bottom line is we could no longer compete, so we're going into voluntary liquidation.
"It is the way the industry has been going. People are buying more and more from overseas markets."
The firm was employed by major publishers to typeset books.
"All our work is related to the book publishing industry, for companies such as Penguin and HarperCollins, and they are just gradually moving everything over to India. They have got pressures themselves, after all," said Mr Rowland.
"Officially, this is our last day but we're finishing off jobs that are outstanding.
"It is very sad but there's not much I can do about it. I can't carry on — it's as simple as that."
