The Bury St Edmunds firm behind some of the finest cups of coffee is to host major event
Some of the finest cups of coffee will be served in Bury St Edmunds next month as baristas from the region compete in a national competition.
Butterworth & Son on Boldero Road, Moreton Hall will host the event on March 5 and 6.
“We started roasting coffee 18 months ago for the first time,” said Rob Butterworth.
“We entered the barista competition and came third last year, having won every award at the regional heat.
“We are excited to be hosting the heat. It is a chance to showcase some of the best coffees in the country.”
The wholesale business specialising in chutneys, teas and coffees, was set up by Mr Butterworth 17 years ago.
The only place in town that serves its coffee is Really Rather Good in Abbeygate Street.
It will roast for four baristas this year having invested £20,000 in its own roaster.
“We wanted more control over the coffees, how they were roasted, and so we could make more speciality coffees,” said Louise Butterworth, manager and Rob’s wife.
It stocks about 20 different coffees from as many different countries, many of them award winning. It also produces its own blends such as a winter blend of Java, Cuban and Samatra coffees.
Butterworths are also in the midst of creating a demonstration/ training area for people in the coffee industry.
Next month’s heat is one of four nationally and is free to attend. The coffees are free for a donation to coffee growing countries.
Competitors have 15 minutes to make four espressos, four cappuccino & four espresso based non-alcoholic speciality drinks.
The finals are in London with the winner going on to an International event in Australia.
