The Big Onion appeals to the complete family
THE second Big Onion Festival at Elveden tomorrow is not just for those who know their onions.
It is a multi-layered event with a programme so varied it will make your eyes water.
Named in recognition of the huge volume of onions grown on Elveden Estate, it also features all kinds of foods, a music festival and more then 60 classic cars including Rolls-Royces, Daimlers and Bentleys.
Held in the estate’s walled garden, there will be more than 50 stalls with food to sample and live cookery demonstrations.
Demonstrating chefs include Richard Bainbridge, of The Great British Menu and head chef at Morston Hall, Justin Kett, from Lavenham’s The Swan, and Elveden’s own executive chef Peter McBurnie, who will use estate produce.
You can sample and buy things from Musk’s sausages and Copella apple juice to produce from The Chilli Company, Hill Farm Oils and Giffords Hall Vineyard.
To keep the party mood going there will be live music until late in the evening.
For the children, Madame Zuccini will bring her vegetable theatre show, starring Lois Leek and Peter Parsnip and an ‘interactive vegetable creature workshop’. For the more active youngsters there will be mini tractors and a bouncy castle.
Elveden Estate’s farming foundations are not forgotten with tractor and trailer rides round the farm, onion games and plenty of facts and figures about onions.
Tickets on the gate are adults £7, children £5 and family £20. For more information, visit www.bigonionfestival.com
