Team to map ruins in garden
Experts used by the Channel 4's Time Team will be in the Abbey Gardens, in Bury St Edmunds, over the next two weeks creating a picture of medieval buildings which stood on the site.
GSB Prospection will carry out a geophysical survey of the gardens to provide a map of the site. This will be used in the future when organising major events in the gardens and to make sure maintenance work does not do any archeological damage.
The 15,000 survey was commissioned by St Edmundsbury Borough Council in partnership with English Heritage and the county archeological service.
The Abbey Gardens – site of the medieval abbey church of St Edmund – are a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
Cllr Lynsey Alexander, St Edmundsbury cabinet member for heritage said: "Hundreds of thousands of people visit the Abbey Gardens every year to enjoy but many may not appreciate the historical sugnificance of the place. "
On Tuesday, from 2-4pm, members of the public can meet the surveyors and see some of their findings.
