A RETIRED school teacher has passed the baton to one of her former pupils.

Lynne Johnson is stepping down from Howard Community Primary, in Bury St Edmunds, after a 37-year teaching career.

Her replacement is Jason Baxter, who attended the school, in St Olaves Road, in the 1990s.

The 58-year-old, who has been at the school for 21 years and remembers teaching a seven-year-old Mr Baxter, said: “This is the time in my life when I want to change direction.

“Jason’s appointment is a full circle which is lovely for the community. He was and still is such a bouncy and enthusiastic lad.” Mrs Johnson, of Beyton, started her teaching career at Honington Primary in 1975 before working for the Service Children’s Education Authority in Germany and was later posted to Holland.

When asked what she enjoyed most about Howard Primary, she said: “It’s got a very strong staff commitment to supporting the pupils learning against a lot of odds.”

A highlight was overseeing the design of a tiled mosaic, which contains a picture of her on one of the tiles.

To celebrate her career, the children created a quilt and a farewell card.

She plans some Australasia travel and is an Olympics volunteer.
