Swimmer is on standby

The ring of a phone will herald the start of a 26-mile feat when Paul Hopfensperger undertakes his first Channel swim for charity this week.

Paul, a Suffolk county councillor and former county swimming champion, has been undergoing rigorous training to prepare for the challenging swim in cold seas and across shipping lanes.

He is aiming to raise 50,000 for St Nicholas' Hospice, in Bury St Edmunds, and Clic Sargent and will get just hours notice that conditions are right.

His swim is booked to take place any time from Monday onwards and will be from Dover.
