Suffolk County Council chairman dies

Ann Rodwell, the chairman of Suffolk County Council, died today after a long battle with cancer.

Mrs Rodwell, 69, who represented Felixstowe, was described by the council's vice-chairman Charles Michell as 'one of those special people who commanded respect and affection from all sides of politics'.

Cllr Michell paid tribute to her courage, saying she had fulfilled her role as chairman by being dedicated to her duties and uncomplaining about her illness.

Cllr Kathy Pollard, leader of the Lib Dems, described her as a 'faithful servant to the people of Suffolk', adding: "We all knew that Ann's time was limited, but had hoped that she could finish her year as county council chairman."

Cllr Julian Swainson, for the Labour group, said her death had meant the loss of a 'councillor with a distinctive presence who was a champion for her corner of Suffolk'.

Mrs Rodwell, who lived in Trimley St Mary, had served as Felixstowe mayor and served the county as a Conservative for just over 24 years.

She and her husband Gordon were partners in a funeral director's firm in Felixstowe until the late 1980s. She also managed a branch of a national limousine hire company until she retired in 1991.

She leaves her husband, two children and four grandchildren.
