Suffolk Show draws the crowds for the 181st year

CROWDS have been enjoying the first day of this year’s Suffolk Show which opened to grey skies but plenty of enthusiasm.

Traditional trades and crafts went on show as the county celebrated its agricultural roots and present day husbandry with a visit from Environment Secretary Caroline Spellman on the first of the show’s two days at Trinity Park in Ipswich.

She said: ““It’s been wonderful to come to the Suffolk Show. The first thing I saw was the Suffolk Punch which is so indicative of the county and very special. It’s great to come to a part of the country I know and love. My job is to make sure the excellent products we make here remain a source of pride for the whole county”

Among the events on offer were displays of hounds, horses, military manouveres with a guest appearance from Wattisham Airfield, vintage tractors and sheep dogs as well as livestock grown in the county.

Also on show were hundreds of firms who support the industry as well as local business amd trade stands and the spectacular Flower Show and craft tents.

Tribute was also paid to those who have served the land for many years with the presentation of long service awards at what is the show’s 181st year.
