Suffolk Phil gets set for 2013
Leslie Olive, conductor of the Suffolk Philharmonic Orchestra.
Sponsors are needed to help Suffolk Philharmonic Orchestra sustain its ambitious programme of concerts and educational events.
Speaking at the launch of its 2013 programme last Friday, founder and conductor Leslie Olive, from Rattlesden, said: “What we haven’t cracked is sponsorship. We’ve really got to dive into the water of business sponsorship.”
They already have a £200 ‘sponsor a player’ scheme for small businesses but seek sponsorship on a larger scale
The professional orchestra, whose inaugural concert was at St Edmundsbury Cathedral last May, plans a concert at The Apex with cellist Julian Lloyd Webber, featuring the Elgar Cello Concerto, on May 26.
But in addition it is scouting venues for community concerts, making classical music accessible to people who might not travel to a concert hall.
Mr Olive spoke of their first community concert in his home village at which an elderly man thanked the musicians at the end and told him he had never been to a concert before.
“That was a victory for me,” he said.
The orchestra will also continue its schools workshops to inspire young musicians and ‘not musicians’. Mr Lloyd Webber may take part in one schools event.
