‘Sudden death syndrome’ blamed for schoolgirl’s death
A 15-year-old school girl who collapsed while trampolining at a Stowmarket leisure centre died from sudden adult death syndrome, an inquest has heard.
Lily Webster, of Weavers Close, Stowmarket, was taking part in a trampolining session at Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre on January 16 when she collapsed.
At an inquest held today at the Active Business Centre in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk Coroner Peter Dean said Lily had just completed some somersaults when she put her hands to her head, said ‘Oh my God’ and fell down.
First aiders rushed to help resuscitate her and an ambulance was called to the gym but she was pronounced dead at the scene within the hour.
The inquest heard that Lily, a year 11 student at Stowmarket High School, had a structurally normal and healthy heart at the time of her death.
Although she had recently visited her GP because of an iron deficiency, she had shown much improvement.
A report by Dr Mary Shepperd, a Consultant Cardiologist at Royal Brompton Hospital, said Lily had suffered a sudden cardiac death with a structurally normal heart.
She noted in her report that 500 people die of the condition in England every year.
Mr Dean added that Lily was much loved and would be greatly missed by those who knew her.
He said: “I would like to offer my thoughts and condolences to Lily’s family, friends and all those close to her.”
