Town centre businesses are fuming after BT left them without phones for five days.

Most of one side of Risbygate Street, Bury St Edmunds, lost phones at 2pm last Thursday and say BT did nothing between Friday afternoon and Tuesday.

John Balaam of Balaam’s Music said: “The country expects business to work 24/7, but not BT. OK, they can have accidents doing a job, but the fact it’s been left for days is disgraceful.”

The businesses also lost credit card machines. Mr Balaam said: “Customers were brilliant: most of them were happy to go and get cash.”

But Mashuk Hasan at the Rose of Bengal said: “People came for a table of four or six and we told them we could not take cards and they said they would go somewhere else. Normally Friday and Saturday are our busiest days.”

Alex Walters of NFU Mutual agents Blackwell, Ward and Walters said: “It’s fortunate we’ve got a support centre we could redirect to, but customers want questions answered.”

BT said that after replacing more than 100 metres of cabling further works were needed in a manhole. Its spokesman said: “This required specially trained engineers to safely work in these spaces. We wish to apologise to those affected”
