St Edmund’s Day sees winners of citizen of the year in Bury St Edmunds named

There were joint winners in the citizen of the year and young citizen of the year awards in Bury St Edmunds last night.

Bury Town Council presented its annual awards which also included best resident’s association, and best allotments awards.

Richard Mortlock, the chairman of the Mildenhall Road Association, and Valerie Legg who raises money for charity through plant sales were named joint citizen of the year.

And there were joint winners in the young citizen award as well.

Jess Kemp and Jonathan Sharp shared that award.

Jess, a year 13 pupil at King Edward VI oragnised a festival for Greenpeace and Oxfam, grew her leg and armpit hair for three months and had it dyed before being waxed to raise £300 for Cancer Research and went technology free for two weeks in aid of the Haiti Earthquake victims.

She makes T-shirts, is a peer mentor at middle schools and plans to raise money for children in India.

Jonathan meanwile was nominated by St Louis Catholic Middle where he had taken part in PTA DIY days, gardening and painting. He has been PE and playground monitor, parental guide at open evenings, and ran a table tennis club for five years and is a member of St John’s Ambulance.

The Mildenhall Road Estate Association was named best resident’s association.

Meanwhile the best allotment awards saw Dr Steve Ohlson named winner for the second year, while John Hills was second and Julie Nye third.

There was also an award for best allotment newcomer which was won by Clifford May, while Janice Anderson was second and Jennifer Woods third.
