Sports fever sweeps through schools

PRIMARY school pupils are signing up to sports activities in their droves following the launch of a new company.
Inspired by coverage of the London Olympics, children are enjoying sports such as football, hockey, rugby, athletics and tennis in curriculum and after school club sessions run by A&M Multi Sports.
The company was started four months ago by Andy Taylor and Mark Lawrance, who work at schools such as Great Whelnetham, Cockfield, Ickworth Park and Rougham Primaries.
Mr Taylor, who has run sports activities in schools for seven years, said: “We’ve had huge pick up from all the schools we go into. It’s because they’ve seen the sports on television and they want to have a go.
“Sport teaches you a lot about winning and losing and how to take part.”
n CREATIVE children at Woolpit Primary have designed textile banners for the village’s St Mary’s Church as part of a community initiative.
The work by Year 3 pupils will be displayed in an exhibition at the church next month for the Angels and Pinnacles scheme, which aims to highlight medieval churches in Suffolk.
Meanwhile, Woolpit and its federation school Rougham Primary are focusing on writing projects inspired by woodland.
n YOUNG agriculture enthusiasts at Ickworth Park Primary, in Horringer, will host a farmer’s market at the school tomorrow.
It is working towards a silver Food for Life award and the event features produce from local traders as well as vegetables grown by pupils at their allotment.
The school’s cooking club is producing recipe packs with the ingredients needed to make leek and potato soup.
It runs from 9.30am to 1pm and entry is free.
n OLD Buckenham Hall School, in Brettenham, took part in a Thanksgiving service at St Edmundsbury Cathedral on Friady as part of its 150th anniversary celebrations.
The same order of service was followed as that used 50 years ago at the school’s centenary service and the congregation sang the same hymns.
