Soldiers on parade for birthday visit to 100-year-old Kath

THREE soldiers from Wattisham Airfield gave 100-year-old Kath Wells a very special surprise when they popped in to wish her a happy birthday.

On Monday, Stowmarket marked Armed Forces Day with a parade through the town.

Hundreds of people lined the streets to welcome the troops parading up Ipswich Street and into the town centre.

A celebration ceremony took place where Mayor of Stowmarket, Anne Whybrow, saluted the troops for their hard work and dedication.

Parade Officer Capt Andy Rodgers then addressed the crowd and an armed forces flag was raised.

But afterwards, Mrs Whybrow and LCpl Anderson, LCpl Burns and Air Trooper Atherton of the 3 Regiment Army Air Corps popped in to visit Mrs Wells – who was celebrating her birthday with her family.

Mrs Whybrow said: “Both Mrs Wells’ husband and father served in the Army and as a child she spent time in India and regaled us with several stories.

“I’m not sure who enjoyed the visit most, Kath, me or the young soldiers – it was a pleasure for us all.”
