Smoke evacuates Thetford staff as drugs raid takes place next door
Fire crews outside Breckland House in Thetford.
Staff at a council office had to be evacuated this morning after smoke started coming out of a vent.
But the staff, from Breckland House in St Nicholas Street, Thetford, were treated to a front row view as police carried out a drugs raid at a nearby property.
Three fire crews from Thetford, East Harling and the multistar from Bury St Edmunds were called to the scene at around 7.30am after an employee reported smelling smoke.
At 8am, two Thetford Police riot vans and two squad cars, complete with sniffer dog, turned up at Bidwell Court to execute a drugs warrant - just yards from Breckland House.
Unfortunately for the officers, the suspect was not home.
Derek Heslop, a local government officer for the Anglia Revenues Partnership, which is based in Breckland House, said he had smelled smoke on the sixth floor.
“I got here about 7.20am and ten minutes later it was coming out of the air vents and was really acrid - kind of like burning rubber,” he said.
Sharon Jones, a senior manager at the building, said workers were still taking calls from home while staff waited to get back into the building.
A fire service spokesman said fire crews had cleared the scene by 10am.
