Signing up to dig into Thetford's past

People interested in exploring Thetford's past, as well as finding out what the life of an archaeologist involves, can learn more at the Ancient House.

The Museum of Thetford Life is running a series of six evening talks, starting on Monday.

Each session, from 6pm to 8pm, covers Thetford's history through its archaeology. Topics will include aerial photography, what happens on an archaeological dig and the conservation of archaeological finds.

The introduction to archaeology course is suitable for beginners and no previous knowledge is required.

Oliver Bone, museum curator, said: "Thetford is remarkably rich in archaeological material. From the Roman silver and gold of the Thetford Treasure, found at Fisons Way in 1979, to fantastic sites such as Castle Hill, Britain's largest medieval earthwork. There's a wealth to discover."

Booking is essential and the enrolment fee for all six sessions is 18 per adult. Cheques must be made payable to Norfolk County Council. You can also pay at the museum or by phone by calling 01842 752599.

The programme is: January 8 – Thetford's history through archaeology, with Oliver Bone, curator; January 15 – Aerial photography, Sophie Tremlet, Norfolk landscape archaeology; January 22 – An introduction to excavation, Heather Wallis, freelance archaeologist; January 29 – Pottery through the ages, Alice Lyons, freelance archaeologist; February 5 – Bones, speaker tbc; February 12 – Archaeological conservation, speaker tbc.
