‘Sick’ Facebook page adds to parents’ grief

BEREAVED parents have called on Facebook to shut down a page which jokes about dead babies.
Leanne Burgess is among thousands of parents who are angered by a dead baby jokes page on the popular website.
“It is heart-breaking. I had a quick look at the site and wish I hadn’t.
“I commented on their site saying ‘To lose a baby, the worst feeling in the world’ – their comment back... ‘To lose a baby is careless’.
“These people are twisted beyond belief. It’s sick.”
The 30-year-old and her husband Peter, had to endure the pain of stillbirth at West Suffolk Hospital, in Bury St Edmunds, in March last year, after doctors confirmed her son Dylan Peter Burgess, had died.
“I had to give birth to a baby knowing I will never hear him cry. I wouldn’t wish it on anybody,” said Leanne.
“It is something we live with every day, we constantly remember that there is a little boy that should be with us.”
The couple have since had a baby girl, Isabelle, who was born in February.
Leanne, who lives in Lakenheath, said she became aware of the Facebook page though Sands, the Stillbirth And Neonatal Death charity.
Lisa Wardle, a spokeswoman for Sands, said: “Regrettably we have been informed there is nothing that can be done to remove it as the page does not breach Facebook’s terms and conditions.”
Bridget Ramsay, a volunteer for bereavement charity Suffolk Cruse, said: “It is such a cruel thing. I can only imagine the people who contribute to this site have never lost someone they love.”
The Bury Free Press contacted Facebook but the company was unavailable for comment.
A Suffolk Police spokesman said the matter can be investigated under the Malicious Communications Act once a formal complaint has been made.
