Sculpture to be focal point
Nigel Kaines has designed a sculpture called 'with the grain' which is going on the King's Road roundabout.
A new sculpture paying homage to Bury St Edmunds’ agricultural past will be placed on a town centre roundabout in February.
‘With the Grain’, made by Nigel Kaines, is a 4m tall sculpture of standing corn made from mild steel, which will sway in the wind.
The sculpture, to be placed in the centre of King’s Road roundabout, will be unveiled on February 11 marking the start of this year’s Bury in Bloom campaign.
Nigel said: “It’s a relatively simple but striking design that captures that agricultural element of the town both past and present.
“Hopefully most people will understand it, it’s a roundabout not something people are going to stare and guess at so it has to have an immediate impact and spark interest because the next moment you are gone.”
The idea and design for the large metal sculpture was formed by Roy Proctor, of Bury in Bloom.
Roy and Nigel choose to use mild steel so the sculpture will evolve over time rusting and changing colour with the weather conditions .
The style of Nigel’s work may look familiar as he was also the creator of the sculpture of St Edmund’s martyrdom on the roundabout at Risbygate Street.
The installation of his latest sculpture is a collaboration between Bury in Bloom, Bury St Edmunds’ Town Council and St Edmundsbury Borough Council.
Nigel believes that public art still plays an important part in forming the identity of a town.
He said: “It really can affect that character of the place, it helps represent the nature of the town.
“If public art stimulates discussion and debate, or any art, then that represents part of its success.”
When placed on the roundabout the sculpture will be surrounded with sustainable planting.
