Scrapyard raid: Six arrested

A Red Lodge scrapyard was raided by more than 100 police officers in a major operation, on Monday.

Six men were arrested after Ponderosa scrapyard, in Bridge End Road, was raided.

One of the men, Robert Joseph McGivern, 38, of New Cheveley Road, Newmarket, has been charged with concealing criminal property – an unspecified quantity of cash – behind a bath panel in a property at the scrapyard.

McGivern appeared at Sudbury Magistrates' Court on Wednesday but is now due to be dealt with at Ipswich Crown Court on December 12.

Two men were arrested on Wednesday morning on suspicion of money laundering.

A 76-year-old man and a 65-year-old man, from Red Lodge, were arrested in London and taken to Suffolk for questioning.

A 21-year-old man from Bury St Edmunds, a 33-year-old man, also of Bury, and a 30-year-old man, of no fixed abode, were arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods but have been released on police bail to return to Bury Police Station on November 20.

The arrests were made following a major police operation on Monday.

More than 100 officers were involved as well as representatives from partner agencies including the Department of Work and Pensions, the DVLA, Suffolk Trading Standards, the Health and Safety Executive, HM Revenue and Customs and the UK Border Agency.
