Scooter thieves leave 84-year-old a prisoner in his own home

Derek Turner says the thieves who broke into his garage and stole his mobility scooter are ‘the lowest of the low’.
Derek, 84, is wheelchair bound and the electric scooter was the only way he could make the short trip to his local pub in Beyton.
The theft was discovered last Thursday when Derek’s carer went into the garage to get the buggy.
Derek said: “The police seem to think it was someone local because it was in the garage covered with a sheet so they had to know it was there.
“I think they’re the lowest of the low to steal that from a poor chap who can’t get out. How low can people get?”
Derek is Beyton born and bred and has been a ‘regular’ at the Beyton Bear for 80 years, since going there as a child to play with the landlord’s son.
“I can’t get down there now I’ve lost the buggy,” he said.
Unfortunately, the buggy is not covered by insurance and Derek does not know how he will replace it if it is not recovered.
Police say the Pride Celebrity X Sport mobility scooter was probably stolen last Wednesday night. They would like anyone who has any information to call Pc Annelly Miles on 101 or the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
The Pride Celebrity X Sport range of mobility scooters retails for between £1,100 and £1,824.
