Aspiring young leaders honed their skills through a series of sports themed activities with the help of an international badminton player.

About 60 students from 10 schools across Suffolk descended on King Edward VI School, in Bury St Edmunds, for the Young Ambassadors County Conference.

In the first of three workshops, Suffolk Sport gave advice on delivering cultural events such as festivals and assemblies based on the Olympic legacy in the pupils’ respective schools.

The group then developed their badminton technique with player Anthony Clark, who competed in the last two Olympics.

King Edward VI students also helped them cultivate their leadership and communication skills.

n BMX half pipe world champion Mike Mullen performed dazzling tricks and stunts at Great Whelnetham Primary.

Using a ramp, he jumperd over headteacher Chris Lawson followed by a number of teachers and a pupil.

He also taught three pupils a balancing trick on his bike.

n Life in the Kagera district of Tanzania was the focus of a series of fun-filled workshops at Thurston Primary.

Supported by the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, pupils looked at music and dance, 3D African animals, fruit preparation and tasting as well as school life in Ngara Anglican Primary School.

The school also held a non uniform day to raise funds for Zaraou, a 10-year-old girl in Niger.

Pupils sponsor her schooling and send her Christmas and birthday cards. She writes to the children twice a year.

n Pupils at Rattlesden Primary created popcorn snowmen as part of their enrichment afternoon work.
