Finborough School dress rehearsal of Rent at the Theatre Royal

Pupils of Finborough School put on Jonathan Larson’s musical Rent at Bury St Edmunds’ Theatre Royal.

The cast had just one day in the theatre to perfect their performances on stage before doing an evening performance in front of an audience on Tuesday.

Luckily, they were able to do a dress rehearsal during the afternoon, watched by fellow pupils.

The cast, from year nine upwards, are took to the stage at the Georgian theatre with their ambitious production of the rock musical based on Puccini’s opera La Bohème.

Rent tackles tough, topical and sensitive issues telling the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.

They called it ‘Rent: the school edition’.

n Culford Prep and Pre-Prep Schools’ pupils were joined by more than 400 children from other schools to sing under the leadership of choral conductor Douglas Coombes for a ‘Singing Together’ day. Seven- to 13-year-olds from St James, Beyton and Blackbourne Middle Schools, Fairstead House School and Rattlesden, Kennett and Sebert Wood Primary Schools took part.

n All six pupils from Bury St Edmunds’ County Upper School who entered the East Anglian Schools’ Portrait Competition were chosen by the judges for exhibition at the Anteros Arts Foundation in Norwich. The artists were Holly McGregor, Sophie Moore, Ceres Pap, Lizzie Pape and Minh Thu-Saggers.

n St Louis Catholic Middle School year seven pupil Meredith Donnachie is through to the County Final of the Books Mastermind competion in March. She answered twenty questions in two minutes on a book of her choice, plus general knowledge.
