PUPILS reaped the rewards of their hard-working green fingers with a farmers’ market that was full to capacity on Saturday.

Ickworth Park Primary School children hosted the market to sell produce ranging from salad items to aubergine and butternut squash which they had grown on their large allotment in Ickworth Park.

Members of the school’s Let’s Get Cooking Club also sold bags with produce and recipes for potato and leek soup – almost 50 bags sold – and Chinese vegetable stir fry, which completely sold out.

Jayne Cook, teacher and allotment champion, said: “They were so excited, they loved being on the stalls and loved selling things they had grown, nurtured and harvested. We were very proud of all of them.”

The farmers’ market proved such a success that the school plans to host two a year, one in spring and one in autumn.

Mrs Cook said: “We were stunned by the success of it because we literally had people streaming through the door the moment we opened and we were full to capacity for virtually the whole morning.”

There were 25 stalls, with the pupils earning £111.
