School’s cash for Mali mill

A Bury St Edmunds school has raised more than £2,200 to buy a new mill to benefit women in impoverished Mali.
Howard Middle handed over the cash to the Mali Development Group for the grain grinding mill in Socourani to be run by a committee of women.
The project will give them more time to spend with their families and take part in other activities such as development work, learning how to read and write as well as improving their income by growing and selling vegetables.
Currently, they use a traditional time consuming method of pounding grain in a tub three times a day.
The school collected the money over the last year through events such as a sponsored walk, a house colour day and St George’s Day celebration.
Deputy head Joe Davenport said: “It’s good because we know where the money is going and what the project is going to do.”
Pupils have developed links with a school in Mali’s capital Bamako exchanging information and photos.
