School in same league as Eton

Dunstable’s Manshead School is delighted to find itself a near neighbour of Eton in an A-level performance league table.

The school had an average point score per student of 976.2 in the ‘A-levels and equivalences’ section of the government’s 2012 school performance tables.

Head Jim Parker said Eton was ranked only slightly ahead of Manshead regarding A-level performance.

Mr Parker said Manshead’s results continued an upward trend.

“We had a great year group,” he said. “They performed really well and many of them have been really successful in going off to their chosen university.

“We have had six this year who have had places at Oxford or Cambridge.”

In that section of the tables, the average point score per student including equivalences were: Queensbury Upper School, 684.7 (Queensbury has now become an academy); All Saints Academy, 481.8.

> In the school performance tables, 2012 ‘topline ‘ figures for the percentage of pupils who achieved five or more A*-C grade GCSEs or equivalent, including English and maths, were as follows.

Top of the table in the Dunstable area was Queensbury Upper School.

Queensbury’s figure showed that 54 per cent of students gained five or more A*-C grade GCSEs or equivalent, including English and maths, which was the same level as the previous year.

At Manshead School, 48 per cent of pupils had achieved that benchmark, a drop compared to the 55 per cent reported in 2011.

And at All Saints Academy, the figure was 44 per cent, up from 2011’s 37 per cent.

Mr Parker believed that the drop in Manshead’s figure for this GCSE benchmark was due to the controversial changes in grade boundaries last year.

He said: “We actually believe that figure should have been 57 per cent.”

The grade boundaries changes sparked a storm of protest.
