School in Bury St Edmunds raises cash to sponsor three guide dogs
Howard Middle
Pupils at Howard Middle School in Bury St Edmunds welcomed Oyster the guide dog and her handler Piers Nummelin to celebrate raising £605 for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.
The money will sponsor three puppies in guide dog training.
Piers describing how having a guide dog had transformed his life since he began to lose his sight. He told the children how Oyster helps him navigate pavements and steps, can take him to specific destinations like work or home, and keeps him safe on our busy streets.
For most of the children this was the first time they had met a guide dog, and it gave them a real understanding of the work of the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association and the huge difference a guide dog can make to the life of someone with little or no sight.
Form tutor Linda Rutter commented, “This was a marvellous opportunity for the pupils to get close to a guide dog and reinforce their commitment to raising more money next year for Guide Dogs for the Blind. Oyster was adorable and very well behaved during the assembly.”
The £605 was raised by a team of pupils selling ice lollies at the end of the summer term, and will be used to sponsor three puppies – Tilly, Rufus and Vinny – who are about to start their guide dog training. The children will be following the puppies’ progress online at sponsorapuppy.org.uk
