Runaway horse struck by van

TWO people have been injured after a runaway horse broke free of its carriage and hit a van.

At 1.35pm on Wednesday, Ambulance crews were called to Dale Hill in Wetheringsett where a horse attached to a carriage had bolted and the carriage had overturned.

A woman in her 40’s, thought to be the rider, was taken to West Suffolk Hospital with minor injuries.

Then just half an hour later, at around 2pm, emergency crews were called to an incident on the A140 near Stoke Ash where a horse had collided with a white Renault Kangoo van.

Police closed the road in both directions while fire crews from Eye, Diss, and Needham Market rescued the female driver, believed to be in her late 40’s, from the vehicle.

She was taken to Ipswich Hospital after complaining of chest and back pain.

The horse died as a result of the collision and was removed from the road with the van.

An ambulance service spokeswoman said: “We had a call to two seperate incidents.

“At first we were called to Wetheringsett at about 1.35pm to a call where a horse carriage had overturned.

“The horse had bolted with the carriage attached.

“We send a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance to that incident.

“A woman aged in her late 40s was seen although she was not seriously injured.

“We then had another call at about 2pm.

“It looks like the horse had bolted and had caused another accident further up the road.

“The horse had collided with a van.”

A police spokesman said they believed the the same horse was involved in both incidents.

He said: “We had a call at 1.45pm at Dale Hill in Wetheringsett.

“A carriage had overturned and the horse bolted.
“Then a little bit down the lane we were called to the A140 wheere a horse had been hit.

“Ambulance and fire service also attended the scene.

“We believe that the to incidents are linked.”
