Ruffley rebels against same sex marriage vote
David Ruffley voted against the bill
Bury St Edmunds’ MP David Ruffley was the only local MP to vote against the Government’s bill to legalise same sex marraiage last night.
As he declared he would in December, Mr Ruffley was among the 175 MPs to vote against the bill.
Matthew Hancock (West Suffolk), Elizabeth Truss (Thetford), Tim Yeo (South Suffolk) and Daniel Poulter (Central Suffolk) were among the 400 ‘aye’ votes.
None of these MPs spoke during the debate in which 327 speeches were made.
In December Mr Ruffley said: “My view on this important institution is clear and unambiguous. Marriage in Judaeo-Christian civilisation means a union between a man and a woman.
“It is not a union between individuals of the same gender. Those individuals of the same sex who wish to enter into a meaningful union can do so by means of a civil partnership.”
