Rubble dumper jailed
A MAN who dumped rubble on to the A14 while driving at 90mph in a bid to shake off pursuing police cars has been jailed for three and a half years.
Glen Norman, 27, had driven off with a fully loaded builder’s truck from the driveway of a property in Poplar Hill, Stowmarket, because he claimed he had no other way of getting home.
As police cars chased Norman between Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket on July 3, he twice activated the truck’s tipping gear, forcing officers and members of the public to brake hard and swerve. Motorists were forced out of the way as Norman swerved from lane to lane at high speed, prosecutor Michael Crimp told Ipswich Crown Court.
Mr Crimp said the dumping of the rubble had been a deliberate action by Norman, who continued driving at between 80mph and 90mph.
With police forced to follow at a distance, Norman’s 40 mile trip ended in a parking area at St Ives where a police helicopter, which had monitored the pursuit, was able to direct officers who arrested him.
His barrister, James McLernon, said Norman had been diagnosed with autism, which had caused him to act in a bizarre and irrational way at times.
Norman, of Coronation Avenue, Huntingdon, was sentenced to a total of three-and-a-half years in prison on Tuesday by Judge John Holt and disqualified from driving for five years.
He had pleaded guilty to causing a danger to road users by discharging brick rubble on to Poplar Road, Stowmarket, and the A14 at Risby and Kentford.
Norman also admitted driving while disqualified, driving with no insurance, dangerous driving and taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent.
