Remanded in custody on murder charge

The man accused of murdering Mary Griffiths has been remanded in custody after a crown court appearance on Tuesday.

John McFarlane, 40, was arrested last Thursday and charged with the murder of Mrs Griffiths, a mother of three from Bury St Edmunds.

McFarlane was arrested by police at an address in Bockhill Road, Bury, after Mrs Griffiths, 38, was found injured with a wound at her home in Bull Rush Crescent in the early hours of May 6. She was taken to West Suffolk Hospital and she later died there.

A group of her friends, some clutching pictures of the fitness instructor, were in the public gallery.

McFarlane, bearded and dressed in black, spoke only to confirm his name.

Judge John Devaux told McFarlane he would be remanded in custody until August 21, when he would be asked to enter a plea to the murder charge.

Mrs Griffiths, worked as a body combat instructor at Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre, which will tomorrow stage a fund-raising event in her name to raise money to help support her children in the coming year.

Her family travelled from Ireland to attend her funeral at St Edmunds Catholic Church last week.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has begun an investigation into how Suffolk Police handled a call from Mrs Griffiths before her death in which she said she was being harrassed.
