Some 50 staff at Godfrey DIY face an uncertain future with the company admitting it will have to make redundancies as it bids to secure its future.

The family firm which has stores in Combs Ford, Diss and Norwich, says it is reformatting its outlets to address ‘trading challenges and changing consumer trends.

Formal redundancy consultation has started with the staff at the DIY and homeware retailer.

“Unfortunately it’s inevitable that some jobs will go, but at this stage we simply don’t know what the final numbers wwill be,” said managing director Barry Godfrey.

“In common with most businesses – especially those in the home improvement and furnishings sector – we are constantly reviewing how we can operate more efficiently, while continuing to provide customers with great deals qand quality service,” Mr Godfrey said.

“It’s no secret that our sector in particular has been hard hit.

“Ongoing economic uncertainty, restricted mortgage lending for first time buyers and poor weather have had a significant impact on sales.

“Clearly we must adapt our stores and explore new opportunities.”

He said the details for the restructuring are still to be finalised.

But the most ‘striking’ change will be at its Norwich base.

There, it has already started a clearance sale ahead of the closure if its 15,000 sqft store.

That will be replaced with a concession led outlet where Godfrey will trade alongside other retailers.

Mr Godfrey said the stores in Combs Ford and Diss will ‘retain their familiar presence’.

“We’ve survived challenging times before and have every intention of doing so again.

“Right now, it’s important to take the steps necessary to secure the long-term future of the business.”

Godfrey DIY , which has been established for 30 years, is one of East Anglia’s leading independent DIY and homeware stores.

Godfrey DIY was founded in Norwich by William Godfrey (Chairman) in April 1983.

Barry Godfrey – Managing Director joined the Company in 1987.

It employs 26 staff at Norwich, which includes its head office and web sales team, 11 staff at Combs Ford and 14 at Diss.
