Rally ‘a welcome boost’ to Mildenhall’s economy
The Mildenhall Cycle Rally.
The thousands of people who flock to the Mildenhall Cycling Rally each summer bring up to £250,000 into the local economy.
The rally attracts in excess of 5,000 people to the local area who spend, on average, £48.91, a survey conducted by Mildenhall Cycling Club and Forest heath District Council has shown.
The survey showed local restaurants, hotels, guesthouses and campsites were among the biggest recipients of this expenditure.
Mark Burchett, chairman of Mildenhall Cycling Club, said: “Although we recognised that the rally could only be of benefit to Mildenhall and the surrounding areas, we did not realise the true extent of the economic impact that the rally was having on the local community. We are extremely delighted though, that the whole community including local businesses are benefitting from the rally, many of whom already do work with us to increase the mutual benefits.”
The total spend of those questioned, who were aged between 17 and 84, ranged from nothing to £2,100.
Leader of Forest Heath District Council, James Waters, said: “These events are a very welcome boost to the local economy - not only through the income they generate at the time but also because people may choose to make return visits at other times of the year. The event attracts visitors from across the country who in turn may spread the word about what a great place Mildenhall is.”
