HE credited his long life to ‘doing things you’re told not to’, smoking since he was 20 and enjoying a whisky every night – Arthur Langran has died aged 102.

Mr Langran featured in the Bury Free Press two years ago when he celebrated his 100th birthday.

Peter, one of his two sons, said: “He had a mischievous sense of humour. He enjoyed life but wasn’t exuberant or excessive.

“He had a hard childhood. He was in an orphanage and was sent to work on a farm in Canada at the age of 13. He then came back to England and joined the Suffolk Regiment.”

He fought in Malta, Africa and Burma during World War Two and was awarded the Burma Star.

Mr Langran was badly injured by a hand grenade and, when he died at North Court Care Home on September 9. still had bits of shrapnel in him from more than 65 years ago.

He lived in Northumberland Avenue for 55 years until becoming ill and moving into the care home in the summer.

He and his late wife Ivy had two children Peter and John.

His funeral will take place at West Suffolk Crematorium, Risby, on Wednesday at 1.30pm.
