Racing honour for George

A Great Barton man, who has dedicated his life to the racing industry, was bestowed with the ultimate honour on Monday.

George Smith, 73, was presented with a Racing Welfare Lifetime in Racing Award at Great Yarmouth racecourse, where a race was also named in his honour – the George Smith Lifetime in Racing Handicap.

Mr Smith also judged the best turned out horse and presented the prize to the race winner, before himself being presented with a silver horses' head trophy by former champion jockey Jamie Spencer.

In 1969, Mr Smith started work as a stud man with the Fairhaven/Broughton family and moved to Barton Stud, where he has worked ever since.

In his time at the stud, Mr Smith has worked with horses include Calaba, Cool Question, Punctilious, Quiz Time and Quote Unquote. He said his favourite horse was Quinlan Terry, which was trained by Sir Mark Prescott and spent several winters at Barton Stud.
