Pupils continue vineyard legacy

School children are keeping the roots of tradition growing at a historic site after replanting several grape vines.
Seven pupils at Ickworth Park Primary, in Horringer, have rehomed three Rondo vines in their allotment in the walled garden at Ickworth House.
They were taken from the estate’s vineyard in the garden, which is being cleared as part of National Trust plans to return it to its original use as a kitchen garden.
Jillian Macready, who set up the vineyard in 1995, has found new owners for about 900 of the 1,000 rehomeable vines.
She said: “I’m thrilled the school has planted three in their allotment because it’s a home from home.
“A part of Ickworth’s heritage will remain on the property and it will be a reminder that there was a vineyard there.”
Her comments were echoed by Jayne Cook, key stage one co-ordinator at the school.
She said: “It’s a little bit of the history of the walled garden and a continuation of what’s gone before.
“The vines we’ve got are 16 years old. We’re hoping they will take okay. We’ve prepared the ground thoroughly so hopefully they will be fine.”
The school chose the Rondo vine as it produces a red dessert grape.
When asked if the Trust’s plans will affect their school’s allotment, she said: “We’re okay to stay there for the time being. Our allotment is very important to us.”
Mrs Macready has to clear the site by February and has about 140 vines left which are sellable.
