Pupils aim to dance to top of the class
HUNDREDS of pupils will be pirouetting to the top of the ballet class as part of a long-running venture with a prestigious school.
Children in Year 3 at Guildhall Feoffment, Hardwick, Howard, Sexton’s Manor, Tollgate and Westgate Primaries, in Bury St Edmunds, are honing their steps for the next six weeks with teachers from The Royal Ballet School.
At the end of the ‘primarySTEPS’ course, the 25 most talented pupils will be invited to further their new skills by joining free weekly classes at King Edward VI for up to four years.
Afterwards, some may be invited to audition for the Royal Ballet’s junior associate programme.
It is the next stage in King Edward’s ongoing partnership with the Royal Ballet, which aims to bring ballet and contemporary dance to young people living outside of London.
As part of the project, middle school and King Edward pupils are showcasing their skills by forming their own dance company, 3Volution.
Meanwhile, another group, Kinetics, consists solely of King Edward students.
Assistant head Rob Walden said: “The Royal Ballet are an elite organisation and their professionalism permeates through the school. Their sense of discipline, rigour and attitude to work ethic is something we feed off.”
IXWORTH Middle has strengthened its international links with a number of language-themed activities.
Forty five pupils in Year 7 journeyed to the French market town of St Omer, where they completed tasks such as buying a stamp and postcard, ordering an ice-cream and buying something from a bakery in French.
Meanwhile, the school celebrated languages around the world with its fifth annual Languages Day.
All lessons had a language element and among those represented were Swedish, Dutch, Russian, Thai, Cypriot and French.
Parents taught a range of languages to individual classes and spoke about life and culture in each of their respective countries.
A cake sale featuring treats made from foreign recipes and decorated with the flags of different countries raised £231 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
DURING Hardwick Middle’s craft club, youngsters knitted various items throughout the year such as scarves, bags, dolls and bookmarks to sell at The Lavender Mob sale at the Abbey Gradens in aid of Cancer Research UK.
About 90 per cent of their stock was sold raising £155 on the day and further funds afterwards.
A YEAR 6 pupil at Cherry Trees Prep School, in Risby, triumphed in a competition by building a rocket from plastic bottles to send a quail egg into the skies.
Louis Gredley scooped first prize in the Young Engineers challenge to launch, fly and land a vehicle containing the egg, which had to be intact at the end of the flight.
Young Engineers runs a network of clubs across the country and organises events and contests to promote an interest in engineering as a career.
MORE than 120 former pupils and staff flocked to Culford School for a reunion of Old Culfordian girls and those who attended the East Anglian School for Girls.
The event also celebrated the opening of Fitzgerald, which is a new girls’ boarding house.
